This is where community group Blossom & Belong steps in, aiming to create a sensory-friendly prom experience for teenage girls in Solihull who have experienced school avoidance. Founded by Fay Joesbury, the group emerged from her personal experience with her daughter, who struggled socially and couldn't attend school. Since its inception, Blossom & Belong has provided a safe space for girls through weekly craft, cooking, and gaming sessions, offering a sense of community and support. The group's mission is to ensure that these girls, who often face social isolation, have the opportunity to participate in a prom, a significant social event that they might otherwise miss. The prom is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring a silent disco, sensory spaces, and fidget toys to accommodate various needs. This inclusive approach ensures that all attendees can enjoy the evening to the fullest. Furthermore, the group has partnered with Madrina, a local charity, to provide free prom dresses and suits, ensuring that financial barriers are removed for those in need. The event also includes a try-on day, allowing the girls to experience the prom dress-up process, and bubbly in champagne flutes for the mothers, adding to the overall positive experience. The response to the event has been overwhelmingly positive, with the girls expressing great excitement. The GoFundMe page launched by the group has received support, demonstrating the community's commitment to making this prom a reality. This initiative highlights the importance of creating inclusive and supportive environments for young people with diverse needs, ensuring that they can participate in significant social events like prom.
