Heaven and Hell on the Llyn Peninsula: Hiking from Pentowyn Dunes to Abersoch (2026)

As I embarked on the 31st day of my journey along the Llyn Peninsula, I couldn't help but reflect on the contrast between the peaceful beauty of the coast and the lively atmosphere of the breakfast room. It was as if I had stepped into a wild west scene, with laughter and conversation abruptly halting as I entered.

The breakfast crowd consisted of four golf-clad couples, a stark contrast to my early morning routine of writing and hunger pangs. Their suggestions for the day's hike, including the renowned Ty Coch Inn, revealed a disconnect between their understanding of coastal hiking and my own experiences.

"Third best beach bar in the world" - a title that left me intrigued and skeptical. Could any beach bar be reached by sailing? And what about the asphalt driveway and parked vehicles? These questions lingered as I navigated the conversation, feigning interest in their pub recommendations and phone photos.

Kate's leg problems and my own health improvements led us to adopt a more flexible hiking schedule. As I set out alone, the name of the beach I started from caught my attention - Pentowyn Dunes, or as some might call it, "Hell's Gate." A sign by the car park warned of treacherous winds, rocks, and currents, a stark contrast to the peaceful bay I witnessed.

A beautiful red fox, a sighting that would have been met with skepticism by some, reminded me of the importance of trusting my own experiences. A photo, though coincidental in its resemblance to one on a website, served as a reminder that not all encounters need visual proof.

The hike that day was a testament to the beauty and challenges of the Llyn Peninsula. A majestic headland climb, a descent into Abersoch's valley harbor, and a myriad of breathtaking views. From breeding bulls to shorn sheep, sailboats to islands, and even a glimpse of pigs, each step revealed a new paradise.

As I sang a psalm of thanks and praise, I felt a deep connection to my Covenanter childhood and the privilege of walking these hills and beaches. The green pastures, quiet waters, and peaceful paths offered a sense of tranquility and gratitude.

The descent into Abersoch brought me face to face with a different kind of challenge - a golf course. Duffers and electric carts, practice swings, and friendly greetings made for an interesting change of pace. Siri, my trusted guide, navigated me through the Welsh street names with her familiar voice, though her pronunciation left something to be desired.

Abersoch, a wealthy village with a unique charm, presented a contrast to the fishing harbor villages of Pembrokeshire and Cornwall. The new wealth had undoubtedly changed the town, but its quaint appeal remained.

Reunited with Kate, we set off in search of a dinner and the fuel to continue our hiking journey. A Mother's Day dedication to the mother of my children, a true bomber hiker and an inspiration, rounded off the day.

In my opinion, this journey along the Llyn Peninsula has been a testament to the power of nature, the beauty of contrast, and the importance of embracing unique experiences. From the laughter-filled breakfast room to the peaceful bay of Hell's Gate, each moment has offered a deeper understanding of the world and a sense of gratitude for the privilege of exploration.
